INSPIRATION PROFILE #6

Simple.Better  Great Hall Scott! friend. Wedding Photographer: Dennis Kwan

altHow do you know Carly? Through Steph Im, of Lick My Spoon

How would you describe what you do? Photographer, primarily of Actor Headshots, events and weddings

What do you consider your biggest success so far and how did you acheive it? The successes keep coming...running my own business successfully, loving what I do, and not having anything else to supplement my income would be my biggest success... hard work and constant hustling.

Did you always know what kind of career you wanted? How did you become independent? I always fantasized about an artistic career but never thought I'd be a professional photographer. I thought I'd be a music video director or movie director or something. I like working on my own because there's noone looking over my shoulder telling me how to do things.

How did you begin building your business? Networking. Friends. Lots of self-promotion. Facebook. Lots of portfolio building and shooting pretty people for free.

What has been your biggest challenge? Getting established in the industry among agents and managers when there are already several existing photographers who are much older and more experienced.

What is the best advice you can give someone regarding work? Getting established in the industry among agents and managers when there are already several existing photographers who are much older and more experienced.

What drives you to do the work you do? My clients are 70% in New York City, 20% in Los Angeles, and scattered around in other cities like Las Vegas, New Orleans, Rhode Island etc. The great thing about my job is that I'm always able to find work in cities I travel to. I'm surrounded by a lot of super successful friends in various industries and I guess I've always wanted to be the best at what I do.

What is your favorite thing to do when you aren't working? Watching movies, tv, traveling, poker, eating food, spending money.
THANK YOU DENNIS!
